Pro Tips
Take your planting to the next level with our Thrive Planter Pro Tips!
Bottom Watering
Instead of watering the soil from the top of the plant, aka top watering, you can water from the bottom directly into the saucer. The saucer holds approximately 1/4 cup of water. Most plants in a 4 inch pot will absorb around 1/2 cup of water, so approximately 2 Thrive Planter saucer fills.
In the Thrive Planter, you'll be able to see the water get absorbed as the water moves up the soil and looks darker. It will take some time so be patient.
Ventilation
To increase oxygen and air to the soil and roots, you can adjust your Thrive Planter's window position. This enables the soil to dry faster. It will also make plants that like more air, like epiphytes (think orchids and bromeliads) happier.
To create vertical air channels on the sides, adjust the window's top corners to lay against the top slots instead of within the slots.
Observation
We suggest keeping your Thrive Planter's door and shade closed most of the time, but you can leave them open. If you leave them open, make sure to monitor for algae since algae thrive in wet soil exposed to light and compete with your plant's roots for oxygen and nutrients.
Repotting
Having the window inserted before planting into the Thrive Planter is the simplest way to add a plant. However, for more control of the bottom soil and plant placement, you can have the window out with the Thrive Planter tilted back as you put the bottom soil and plant in place. You'll then insert the window and add the remaining soil to fill any large gaps and raise the soil up to approximately half an inch below the Thrive Planter's top edge.
